Glendale Library Arts and Culture has a public art program called Beyond the Box. Every year they post an open call for artists to participate. In 2020, post-George Floyd, their theme addressed culture and diversity.

glendaleOUT often applies to this program. We donate time and supplies and we use the full stipend for our annual scholarship. Every year we award $1,000 to a college-bound, qualified graduating senior in the Glendale Unified School District. We have a rigorous application that looks at both academics and actions these students have committed to towards their LGBTQIA+ peers and community.

We applied to this round, our design was approved, and we completed the box. We called it "Gender Outside the Box." On each side was a different figure, each representing a different gender, each wearing the colors of the flag for that gender. It included transgender, gender queer, gender fluid, and non-binary. Each figure was interconnected like a string of paper dolls.

In the last 5 years, this utility box has been vandalized 6 times. We repaired it three.

And then this.

We repaired the box again, and we will continue to do so. Ara Najarian is the current mayor of Glendale who uses his pulpit to invite the community to damage Glendale public property, continuing to cost the city money at the expense of his LGBTQIA+ community. So here we are, darlings; let's sling.
