While Lady Whistledale is out there in the middle of nowhere coaxing hard truths, we also took a side foray into DTLA this past Saturday to pay tribute to the dead. Because at glendaleOUT we know that no one is safe unless all are safe. We don't stand just for our LGBTQIA+ neighbors, we stand for all our neighbors who share in the loss of representation and safe autonomy.
70 coffins, signifying 70 ICE related deaths, were carried from Los Angeles City Hall to historic Olvera Street. The visual impact of 70 coffins with 70 printed photos of the dead along with the circumstances of their deaths was a tearjerker no doubt - this loss of life, empathy, reason, safety for our neighbors and communities, all minus recourse.
When we were kids, we learned about World War II, about the Nazis and about concentration camps. Every kid who wondered how everyone could have let that happen is now all grown up letting it happen. We are now all grown up and learning "never again" means nothing.
This is not justice and this is not safety based; this is spite and murder. How do we make it stop?
"I am a truthful man,
From the land of the palm.
Before dying, I want to
share these poems of my soul.
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
"My verses are light green,
But they are also flaming red.
My verses are like a wounded fawn,
Seeking refuge in the mountain.
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
"I cultivate a white rose
In June and in January
For the sincere friend
Who gives me his hand.
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
"And for the cruel one who would tear out
This heart with which I live.
I cultivate neither thistles nor nettles
I cultivate a white rose.
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
"With the poor people of this earth,
I want to share my lot.
The little streams of the mountains
Please me more than the sea.
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera"
